Emperador Marble
Emperador is a brown stone with paler, fractured-looking veining, named for stone quarried mainly in southeast Spain. It is sold as marble, but geologically it is a dolomitic limestone. The trade sells darker and lighter grades, and SoCal Tiles carries both: Emperador Dark and Emperador Light.

Appearance and variation
A brown background with paler, interlaced veining that looks fractured. The Dark grade is deep brown to near black; the Light grade is a paler, coffee-with-milk brown.
Depth of color and vein pattern vary from block to block and between production lots. Order a sample from the product page before deciding, and keep a large installation to one lot where possible.
About Emperador Marble
Limestone sold as marble. Emperador is a dolomitic limestone with a brecciated structure: broken and re-cemented rock, which gives the veining its fractured look. The trade sells it as marble. See the Marble family page.
What the grades mean. Grade names aren't used consistently. One trade source calls the darker shades "Marrón Imperial" and the lighter ones "Marrón Emperador," the reverse of the usual "Dark" and "Light" labels in the US tile trade. Compare samples rather than relying on the grade name.
Where the name comes from. The main quarries are in southeast Spain, around Yecla, Jumilla, Calasparra and Caudete. This describes the stone type, not the source of any particular lot.

Common questions
Is Emperador really marble?
Not geologically. It is a dolomitic limestone, sold as marble across the stone trade. Like other calcium-carbonate stone, it is sensitive to acids.
What is the difference between Emperador Dark and Emperador Light?
They are darker and lighter grades of the same brown stone. Grade names vary by supplier, so compare samples if the shade matters. SoCal Tiles sells both.
