Emperador Marble
Emperador is a brown stone with paler, fractured-looking veining, named for stone quarried mainly in southeast Spain. It is sold as marble, but geologically it is a dolomitic limestone. Appearance and variation
A brown background with paler, interlaced veining that looks fractured. The Dark grade is deep brown to near black; the Light grade is a paler, coffee-with-milk brown.
Depth of color and vein pattern vary from block to block and between production lots. Order a sample from the product page before deciding, and keep a large installation to one lot where possible.

About Emperador Marble
Limestone sold as marble. Emperador is a dolomitic limestone with a brecciated structure: broken and re-cemented rock, which gives the veining its fractured look. The trade sells it as marble. See the Marble family page.
What the grades mean. Grade names aren't used consistently. One trade source calls the darker shades "Marrón Imperial" and the lighter ones "Marrón Emperador," the reverse of the usual "Dark" and "Light" labels in the US tile trade. Compare samples rather than relying on the grade name.
Where the name comes from. The main quarries are in southeast Spain, around Yecla, Jumilla, Calasparra and Caudete. This describes the stone type, not the source of any particular lot.

Dark Emperador is the deep brown to near-black grade; light Emperador is the paler, coffee-with-milk brown. Both share the same fractured, pale veining, so they pair well. Is Emperador really marble?
Not geologically. It is a dolomitic limestone, sold as marble across the stone trade. Like other calcium-carbonate stone, it is sensitive to acids.
What is the difference between Emperador Dark and Emperador Light?
They are darker and lighter grades of the same brown stone. Grade names vary by supplier, so compare samples if the shade matters. SoCal Tiles sells both.

Is dark Emperador black?
No. Dark Emperador is a very deep brown that can look nearly black in low light, but it is not a true black. If you want black with white veining, look at Nero Marquina instead.
What does Emperador Light look like?
Emperador Light, also searched as light Emperador, is a warmer, paler brown than the Dark grade, close to coffee with milk. It keeps the same pale, fractured veining. SoCal Tiles sells it Polished and Tumbled.
What is Emperador stone made of?
Emperador is a dolomitic limestone with a brecciated structure, meaning broken rock that was cemented back together. That is what creates the fractured-looking veins. The stone trade sells it as marble.
Does Emperador stain or etch?
It can do both. Like other calcium-carbonate stone, Emperador etches when acids such as lemon juice or vinegar touch it, and it can stain if spills sit. Sealing helps resist stains but does not prevent etching. Wipe spills quickly.
Which finish is best for Emperador tile?
It depends on the look you want. Polished is glossy and shows depth of color; Honed is soft and matte; Tumbled and Split-Faced have a textured, rustic feel. Dark polished stone shows etch marks and dust more, so many people choose honed or tumbled for busy floors.
Is Emperador good for floors, bathrooms and backsplashes?
Yes for indoor floors, walls, bathrooms and backsplashes, with normal marble care: seal it, wipe spills and keep acidic cleaners away. Use a honed or tumbled finish where you want a less slippery, more forgiving surface.
Will my Emperador tiles match my sample?
They will be close, but not identical. Depth of brown and vein pattern vary between blocks and production lots. Order a sample first, and keep a large installation to one lot where possible.
What tile goes well with Emperador?
