Questions about travertine tile
What is travertine stone?
Travertine is a natural stone formed in mineral spring deposits, a type of limestone known for its warm tones and natural pits and veining. It has been used in building for centuries. See what is travertine for the full story.
Is travertine marble?
No. Travertine is a limestone, while marble is a metamorphic stone, so travertine marble tile is really two different stones with a similar warm, natural look. Marble is usually smoother and more veined, travertine is more earthy. Compare them in travertine vs marble or browse marble tile if you want both.
How do you lay travertine tile?
Start with a flat, solid, clean base. Mix tiles from several boxes, dry-lay them to check the color blend, then set them with a setting material suited to natural stone and grout. Seal the stone before installing. Our installation guide and DIY tile projects walk you through it.
Can travertine be polished?
Yes. Some travertine is sold filled and polished for a glossy surface, while filled and honed gives a soft matte look and is very popular for floors. Tumbled has a softer, aged edge. Shop honed travertine, tumbled travertine or filled and honed travertine, and check each product page for polished options. Polishing an installed floor is a job for a stone restoration pro.
Is travertine porous? Does it need sealing?
Travertine is naturally porous, so it takes a sealer to resist stains and moisture. Seal before installing and reseal from time to time. Filled travertine has its natural holes filled for a smoother surface, but it still needs sealing. Read filled vs unfilled travertine and the travertine care guide.
How do I clean and care for travertine? Can I use bleach?
Skip bleach and acidic cleaners such as vinegar, because they can dull or etch the surface. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner, wipe spills fast and reseal as needed. Routine upkeep is simple, and our travertine care guide and stone care guide cover it.
What are filled and unfilled travertine, and is there epoxy in it?
Travertine has natural holes. Filled travertine has those holes filled at the factory with a cement or resin-based filler, then honed or polished flat. Unfilled keeps the open texture, often with a brushed and chiseled look. See filled vs unfilled travertine to choose.
What finishes does travertine come in?
Our travertine comes tumbled, honed, filled and honed, filled and polished, split-faced, and brushed and chiseled, depending on the product. Each finish changes the feel and the sheen, so check the finish on the product page. Our honed vs polished guide helps you compare.
What sizes do travertine tiles come in?
Popular travertine tile sizes here include 12x12, 12x24, 16x16, 16x24, 18x18 and 24x24 for floors and walls, and 4x4 and 6x6 for smaller runs. Mosaics come in 1x1, 2x2, 1x2 brick and similar sizes. Size and finish choices vary by stone, so use the size collections above or the tile calculator to plan.
Do you sell large format travertine tile?
Yes, travertine is offered up to 24x24, and some stones also come in 16x24 and 12x24 formats. Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines and a calm, continuous look. Browse large format stone tile and plan joints with the installation guide.
What colors does travertine come in?
Travertine runs from pale ivory and cream through gold, rust and amber to walnut, chocolate and espresso browns, plus cooler silver-gray blends. Each family has its own character, so see the stone families above. Walnut and Scabos are our deepest browns, with chocolate and rust tones, and cream shades are in Ivory (Light), Valencia and Durango Cream.
Where can I find dark travertine tile?
Start with Walnut travertine for deep brown and espresso tones and Scabos travertine for dark walnut, chocolate and rust variation (sometimes spelled Scabas). Noce travertine is a rich walnut brown. Dark travertine pairs well with light stone like Ivory (Light).
Where does travertine come from? Do you sell Italian, Turkish or Mexican travertine?
Travertine is quarried in several countries, including Italy, Turkey and Mexico. Origin differs by stone, so check the product page. Durango Cream is Mexican travertine. For a pale, creamy look try Ivory (Light) travertine.
What travertine patterns and mosaic shapes are available?
You can choose Versailles pattern, brick, herringbone, diamond, hexagon, pinwheel, pebble, random-strip and ledger-panel styles, depending on the stone. Mosaics are mounted on sheets for easy installation. Browse Versailles pattern tile, brick mosaics and herringbone mosaics.
Do you have travertine borders, accent tiles and baseboard?
Yes. Liners (pencil, bullnose, dome), chair rails, crown, quarter-round and baseboard are available in many travertine stones, so you can finish a room cleanly. These double as travertine border and accent tile. See travertine trim and moldings and pencil liners.
